Brain Teaser – July 6

Dr. Johnson and Dr. Smith both saw patients. If Dr. Smith saw one of Dr. Johnson’s patients, then they would’ve seen the same number of patients.

If Dr. Johnson saw one of Dr. Smith’s patients, then Dr. Johnson would have seen twice more patients as Dr. Smith.

How many patients did Dr. Johnson and Dr. Smith see together?

See the answer

Answer: The total number of patients is 12. Let x be the number of Dr. Johnson’s patients, and y be the number of Dr. Smith’s patients. Then x-1=y+1, and x+1=2*(y-1), so x=7, and y=5. Therefore, x+y=12.
