The 8 Cups of Water Rumour

Rumour: Drinking 8 cups of water a day helps with weight loss.

Fact: This is false.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association – Pediatrics, there is no benefit of drinking 8 glasses of water a day on weight loss. In this study, 38 adolescents were recruited and were randomized to either drink 8 glasses of water a day, or not, for 6 months. Participants recorded their daily consumption of water and their change in weight was analyzed.

The results of the study showed that the increased intake in water did not show any changes in BMI at the end of the trial. Although both groups of participants increased their level of water intake, participants’ BMIs remained almost the same as what they were at the beginning of the study.
